The Davis Cup spirit was alive and ‘hitting’ at Salisbury Recreation Precinct on Sunday 10th July as Jason Todd and John Warnock Bennett (Accredited Club Professional Coaches) provided a Davis Cup experience to 42 children through a MLC Tennis Hot Shots round robin tournament.

With 21 teams registered across all levels – red (3 years to 8 years), orange (7 – 11 year of age) and green (7 – 12 years of age) children participated in a fun round robin format.   To keep interest levels up, build friendships and keep the empathise on having fun matches consisted of singles, doubles and reverse singles – the format proved successful as many great rallies were had across all levels.

Anne-Marie Handke, Senior Community Tennis Officer said “Through the introduction of the MLC Tennis Hot Shots we are seeing the confidence of children aged 5-10 years develop as they learn to serve, rally and score in a match.  This has been a great initiative by the Salisbury Recreation Precinct to run a tournament for all children to be part of and Tennis SA continues to provide support to the centre

Jason Todd said “ For many of the players it was their first a tournament experience and although there was a winning team on the day, everyone was a winner with the quality of tennis and rewarded by receiving a participation certificate and trophy.  This undoubtedly will become an annual event – we are even starting to prepare for the Grand Slam Series due to the popularity!”

Although the rain came in near the end of the day and the green ball was washed out before completion, spirits were not damped with the competition rescheduled for Sunday 24th July.
