Dr. Alistair MacDonald, currently CEO of Tennis SA, is set to take on a key leadership role with Tennis Australia as Tournaments and Competitions Manager.
MacDonald will be responsible for the leadership and direction of all Tennis Australia sanctioned tournaments – from grass roots and junior development through to the Pro Tour – and the growth of competition play nationally.
Another key area of responsibility will be the National Tennis League, an initiative MacDonald introduced successfully into South Australia this year.
“I’m very pleased to announce Ali’s appointment in this new, expanded role,” said Tom Larner, Manager, Tennis Operations.
“Ali has been the CEO of Tennis SA since 2004 and brings a wealth of experience and broad understanding of both our sport and the business at all levels.
“He has impeccable credentials in the area of tournaments and competitions and has achieved great success as Co-Tournament Director of the World Tennis Challenge.
“In his time at Tennis SA Ali has managed both the commercial and community aspects of the sport at a high level and we look forward to welcoming him as a valuable addition to our team,” Larner continued.
MacDonald’s lifetime involvement in the sport includes a tennis scholarship to the University of Texas where he captained the tennis team and was awarded the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award. He completed degrees in both Business and Psychology, and throughout his time at Tennis SA has continued as a registered Psychologist, actively supervising Masters Students at both the University of SA and Adelaide.
In 2008, in partnership with Darren Cahill, Mark Woodforde and Roger Rasheed, MacDonald designed, planned and delivered the first World Tennis Challenge, a unique competition pairing pro players with legends of the games in an entertaining world team format.
Other key achievements include designing and pioneering an alliance with SportDev Australia, resulting in more than $7 million worth of facility development over the past two years in a business unit which now provides services across four states and territories.
“I am excited by the opportunity provided by Tennis Australia to expand on the good work already achieved by the current and past team in the area of competitions and tournaments,” MacDonald said today.
“It is a privilege to serve the tennis community I am very excited to have the opportunity to further mycareer in this terrific sport.”
MacDonald will continue in his role as Tournament Director for the World Team Challenge and will begin transitioning into this new Melbourne-based position early this year.
