South Australia’s representatives in the National Tennis League Playoffs at Melbourne Park got off to an impressive start today with three of the four teams recording victories in their first pool ties.
In the Men’s, Rostrevor Raiders shook off the late withdrawal of Colin Ebelthite, defeating Wembley Downs (WA) and Somerton Park Sharks defeated Peppermint Grove (WA) by the narrowest of possible margins.
Flagstaff Freighters appear genuine title contenders with an emphatic six rubbers to nil win over Hensman Midland (WA).
The Trinity Titans women’s team went down four rubbers to two to Dalkeith (WA).
The first day of the National Tennis League (NTL) Playoffs accentuated the potential of the league moving forward with quality tennis played across the day’s play.
With the first matches hitting court at 8.30am, the intensity of the competition went full throttle from the get-go. With little margin for error if teams are to progress to the final tomorrow afternoon, rubbers ranged from cagey affairs to powerful slug-fests. The fact many players were meeting their opposition for the first time lead to an element of the unknown that added to the intrigue of this competition.
Each South Australian team will play one more pool game tomorrow morning and the finals will be held tomorrow afternoon from 4.30pm.
