The Foundation Cup Regional Championships got underway on Sunday the 12th of February with Port Lincoln hosting the event for the Lower West Coast Region. The first of the six regional events was a success with over 35 juniors from across the West Coast competing for the opportunity to be crowned as the Regional Champions.

Tennis Australia National Academy coaches present on the day were impressed with the local talent especially the athletic ability shown during the physical testing conducted at the completion of the tournament. Parents attending the player pathway sessions run by National Academy head coach Milo Bradley found it to be very educational and interesting to get a clear understanding of how regional juniors can progress through competition and tournament pathways.

Boys and Girls playing in the 13/U age group are also competing for the chance to represent their region at the State Foundation Cup. The State Foundation Cup is played in September at a regional South Australian venue (TBC for 2012) with four boys and four girls from each region selected to compete in teams and individual events. At the State event boys and girls regional teams champions are crowned and the four semi finalists in the boys and girls individual event are selected to represent regional South Australia at the National Foundation Cup held in Sydney in January.

Over the next five weeks the remaining five Regional Championships are being run across South Australia, National Academy Coaches will be present at each of these Regional Championships to meet parents, run player pathway sessions and to conduct physical testing of regional junior tennis players.
