Tennis Australia this week released the Australian Ranking Tournament Calendar for the first half of 2013.
After a successful overhaul of the 2012 calendar, the 2013 version retains a similar schedule primarily taking part in holiday periods and, where possible, avoiding major clashes with local competitions or events. The Easter holiday period has been kept clear as a show of support for the traditional regional events taking place over this time.
The AMT and OJT tournaments went through a significant format change in 2012, with athletes separated into main draw and qualifying events rather than the traditional format of starting all athletes in the same position.
This will continue for the Platinum and Gold level events in 2013, but tournaments with a Silver, Bronze or White status will be offered the opportunity to return to a traditional format. This decision will be taken by the tournament host in consultation with Tennis SA.
The majority of feedback that was received from all stakeholders regarding the change in format this year was overwhelmingly positive with many agreeing with the philosophy to improve the quality of competitive opportunities that is currently being offered to our up-and-coming athletes.
The Australian Ranking tournament circuit starts on January 1st, with many of the January tournaments opening their entries in November. To view the calendar and to enter online, visit http://www.tennis.com.au/sa/tournaments
The calendar for the second half of 2013 will be released in March.
There are four AR tournaments remaining in 2012, including the Health Partners Memorial Drive AMT (Nov 25-28), Centre Court December Age OJT – Happy Valley (Dec 10-14), IGA Fresh Westside Murray Bridge OJT (Dec 15-18) and the Just 4 Tennis New Years Open AMT (Dec 26-30).
