1 November 2012 | Tennis SA

After the success of the National Tennis League pilot competition conducted in South Australia in 2011, the nationwide rollout of the concept takes place in November 2012 as the Asia-Pacific Tennis League (ATL) players are now competing for a share in over $100,000 prize money.

The ATL is an innovative elite team based competition taking place comprising of six men’s and women’s teams playing a round-robin format and then the top two teams participating in the SA-Conference Final for the title of SA Champions.

Today, we profile the Somerton Park Sharks.

The Sharks are the only team in the ladies’ competition that did not participate in the 2011 National Tennis League, but Team Manager Scott Way has assembled a talented young team of players who have regular success in high level tournaments and competitions.

The team appears well balanced on paper and the impressive combination of Elyse Edwards and Amy Sneath in the one and two positions are sure to take their share of rubbers to give their team solid starts.

The group will also be relying on being a close knit group with an impressive team spirit for what is a cut-throat competition.

“Fortunately all of the team members know each other so that has made it easier to come together as a team. We have had several training sessions as well to sort out doubles combinations.” Said Mr Way.

“Our key is our depth, but Elyse Edwards is as keen as mustard, so look out for her to shine”.

Off-court, the team has been busy procuring an impressive portfolio of sponsors and a famous ambassador.

“We are fortunate to have some well known SA and international sponsors. Haighs are our major sponsor and we understand that this is the first time they have sponsored a sporting team!  We also have support from National Pharmacies, Samsung SA and PKF.

We have also asked shark attack survivor Rodney Fox to be our patron.”
