The 2012 Asia-Pacific Tennis League SA Conference has concluded with two somewhat comprehensive victories in the finals played at Memorial Drive on Friday night.
In the women’s final, the Flagstaff Freighters swept past the Golden Grove Lions six rubbers to nil. In the singles, ‘imports’ Bojana Bobusic and Karolina Wlodarczak took out the 1 and 2, whilst talented young locals, Brooke Rischbieth and Chloe Hule won the 3 and 4 singles respectively.
In the men’s final, The Glenlea Gators prodigious young talent was too much for The Drive, however the score board that read 5 rubbers to 1 probably does not do The Drive justice. In the singles, the match up of Luke Saville and Colin Ebelthite lived up to expectations with an epic encounter that saw Saville prevail 4-3 4-3. In the other singles of note, Glenlea’s Jack Schipanski had a battle on his hands to overcome 15 year old Yuya Ito 4-2, 1-4, 4-2.
The Drive took their solitary rubber in the doubles with Ebelthite pairing with Luke Smith to win 4-2 4-3 over Saville and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Both Flagstaff and Glenea now progress to the ATL National Playoff in Melbourne during the Australian Open, and with the talent at their disposal, will rate themselves as good chances.
Presentations at the end of the night included a range of individual awards.
The Ken McGregor Foundation sponsored the ‘Rising Star’ awards with $1,500 going to the most outstanding 18/U player of the ATL SA Conference. Bradley Mousley of Broadview Tigers won the boys’ whilst Nicole Kraemer of the Gully Subways was the most outstanding girl.
The ATL SA-Conference Player of the Series Awards went to Matt Langley of Broadview Tigers and Bojana Bobusic of the Flagstaff Freighters.
Finally, the ‘All SA’ Conference Teams were announced with Matt Langley (Broadview Tigers), Brad Mousley (Broadview Tigers), Paul Kramberger (The Drive) and Todd Ley (Glenlea Gators) in the men’s team and Bojana Bobusic (Flagstaff Freighters), Karolina Wlodarczak (Flagstaff Freighters), Leah Daw (Goodwood Saints) and Nicole Kraemer (Gully Subways) in the ladies.
