Day 16 proved to be another successful day for SA athletes and National Academy Athletes here at Melbourne Park
The South Australian Girls 12/U Team consisting of Jeanette Lin, Selina Turulja and Tahlia Van Der Eerden stamped their authority in the Margaret Court Cup when they defeated NSW’s 2/0 in today’s semi final. This win places the team managed by Sharon Hambly into the final against Queensland. Both South Australia and Queensland head into this final undefeated. The South Australian boys team defeated Victoria B today and play Western Australia for positions 5 or 6. The boys here are Stefan Norodom, Sam May & Sean Van Rensburg with the manager being Jim Chaousis.
The South Australian 16/U boys highlighted just how strong they are here with 3 of the 8 remaining boys in the draw from SA.
Number 1 seed Brad Mousley progressed to the Quarter Final with a solid 6/2, 6/1 win over Scott Webster. Fifth seed Lawrence Bataljin also won in straight sets defeating Claran Lavers 6/2, 6/2. Port Pirie’s Kurtis Wilson caused the upset of the day when he defeated Junior Davis Representative and Number 3 seed Daniel Guccione 7/6 in the 3rd set. SA’s Thanasi Kokkinakis and Li Tu
were also eligible to play in the 16s Nationals. Brad and Lawrence have also progressed to the doubles Quarter Finals with their respective partners.
National Academy invitee Bojana Bobusic who trains with the Adelaide program fought from a set down to defeat Ashleigh Barty ranked 176 in the World. Bobusic from West Australia currently
ranked 333 showed real poise late in the match to help her progress to the Semi Final of the AO Wildcard Playoff for the 2nd year in a row. Boj will now meet ArinaRodionova in the Semi Final on Saturday
This Sunday will see the Optus 12/U Australian Championships begin with thirteen of SA’s best 12/U athletes competing. Brett McLennan will join the coaching staff for the 12s Nationals as we get close o the last week of Showdown that really does not Slowdown.
