Roxby Downs, a mining town in outback South Australia embraces the MLC Tennis Hot Shots in Schools program.

Over 50 children, parents and teachers enjoyed the sunshine and blue skies at the Roxby Downs Tennis Club Open Day on Sunday 11 August 2013.

Brett McLennan (Coach and Talent Development Manager) who made the 563 kilometers journey to the mining town in outback South Australia welcomed teaches from Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School and Andamooka Primary School and used the opportunity to highlight the benefits of the MLC Tennis Hot Shots in Schools program.

“Roxby Downs have a young tennis community, and led by Rebecca Cooke, are really embracing the MLC Tennis Hot Shots in Schools concept – evidential by the strong turnout on Sunday” said Brett.

“The Hot Shots in Schools program is based on a strategy that engages schools, teachers and coaches – it’s ideal for a community such as Roxby who are enthusiast about growing participation and getting tennis into school curriculum.”

“We look forward to working with the Roxby Downs community.”

What is the Nationals Sports Partnership Program?

The National Schools Partnership program (NSPP) is an exciting initiative for schools. Launched in 2012, the program is designed to support schools who fully embrace tennis in their Health and Physical Education curriculum while creating partnerships with local MLC Tennis Hot Shots (MLCTHS) Coaches or community club and state tennis associations.

The focus of this program is to create partnerships that will ensure a pathway for all children in your school to experience tennis as part of the curriculum and then continue their involvement directly through their local MLCTHS coach and/or community club venue. This pathway is vital so children and parents can see how they can get involved in tennis at the local community level after a quality first experience at their school

Engaging schools

To join the NSPP and become an official MLC Tennis Hot Shots school venue, schools must meet a specified criteria. For the schools that deliver the program, there are some amazing benefits that will reward both the school and its students.
