THE success of south western suburbs tennis star Thanasi Kokkinakis has had an immediate flow-on affect in the local area, Marion Tennis Club says.

Marion’s coach Rick Davey says he has been fielding extra phone calls from parents wanting to get their children involved in the sport since 17-year-old Seacombe Gardens resident Kokkinakis paired with Nick Kyrgios to win the Wimbledon boy’s double title in June.

“It’s great to see former Glenelg District Junior players excelling on the world stage,” Davey says. “Thanassi’s performance follows on from Somerton player Luke Saville’s 2011 Wimbledon junior singles triumph.

“I think it shows parents and kids that tennis can take you all over the world, but the great thing about the sport is the fact it can be enjoyed at all levels.” In response to the swell in interest, Marion will hold a Come n’ Try day this Sunday, August 25, from 9am-1pm.

Children will receive free introductory coaching on the day and there will also be a free barbecue.

Davey said all children were welcome to attend, even if they had no background in the sport.
