South Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis has progressed to the quarterfinals of the US Open following a three-set win over Austria’s Lucas Miedler.

Kokkinakis won 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-2, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with second seed Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy.

Kokkinakis and Quinzi also combined for the boys’ doubles event at Flushing Meadows this year, but on Thursday went down 6-2 7-6(7) to France’s Quentin Halys and Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal.

The singles quarterfinal between Kokkinakis and Quinzi will pit two of 2013’s strongest-performing juniors against one another; Quinzi is the reigning junior Wimbledon champion, while Kokkinakis reached the Australian Open boys’ final in January.

Kokkinakis will face Quinzi on Friday afternoon (US Eastern time).
