The Flagstaff Freighters have made the final of the Asia Pacific Tennis League National Playoff in Melbourne played in the second week of the Australian Open. The Freighters picked up Polish world number 123 to bolster their team for the playoff and won their way through to the final after wins over The Shaw Park Sharks in round one and the Stanmore Wyverns in the semi final.
In the final the Freighters came up against a powerful Royal South Yarra Royals team who had Australian top ten players Olivia Rogowska, Azra Hadzic and Storm Sanders in their line up.
After the Royals took a three one lead into the doubles after Freighter Jess Moore was able to win Flagstaff their lone singles match of the tie it went down to two tense doubles matches. In the bottom doubles Jess Moore and youngster Petra Hule were caused an upset with a resounding 4-1 4-2 win over Tammi Patterson and Samantha Harris. The ATL title went down to the final doubles match with Flagstaff’s Nicole Collie and Linette going down in a thriller to Rogowska and Sanders 13-11 in the third set match tiebreak.
In the men’s the Trinity Titans proved to be very competitive after losing their first match to Japan Phoenix and recovered to win their second match against the Wembly Downs Wizards and finishing in fifith place in the Men’s National Playoff.
