Sunday saw the 2014 City of Salisbury Tennis International singles final played in perfect conditions at the Salisbury Recreation Precinct.

The finalists has been decided after some upsets on semi-final day, with unseeded player Yafan Wang (CHN) defeating number one seed Misa Eguchi (JPN) 2-6 6-3 6-1 and fifth seed Su Jeong Jang (KOR) defeating number two seed Hiroko Kuwata (JPN) 6-2 6-3.

In an exciting match, Jang won the first set of the final, six games to three. Wang then fought back and raced ahead in the second set, before a momentum change saw Jang take it to a tiebreak and win the championship in straight sets, 6-3 7-6(6).

In an exciting prelude to the final, a MLC Tennis Hot Shots Community Play Gala Day was hosted on site, with around 30 children attending to have a go at modified tennis and test their fastest serve on the speed serve. Children then lined up prior to the final and formed a guard of honour for the players.

“After eight days of play, it was great to have such an entertaining and close final between Su Jeong and Yafan,” said Breanna Hassam, City of Salisbury Tennis International Tournament Director.

“Our congratulations to the staff and officials who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to put this tournament together,” added Hassam.

Jang had a successful week in Salisbury, also making her way to the doubles final played in a twilight match on Friday. Jang combined with So-Ra Lee (KOR), but they were defeated by formidable Japanese duo, Eguchi and Miki Miyamura 6-2 6-2 in an entertaining match.

The City of Salisbury Tennis International is part of the 2014 Australian Pro Tour, a series of professional tennis events that bridge junior events and the WTA Tour, providing an opportunity for players to earn their first world ranking points.
