The South Australian towns of Macclesfield/Echunga and Watervale are set to celebrate a successful alignment with Australian Open champions Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na as winners of Tennis Australia’s unique AO Blitz initiative.
The towns have been working together with Tennis Australia, Tennis South Australia and local communities to organise town celebrations on Saturday 15 March and Sunday 16 March respectively. Tennis legends Todd Woodbridge and John Fitzgerald will attend both parties to celebrate the towns’ AO Blitz wins with the local communities.
On Saturday 15 March Macclesfield/Echunga will host an evening of family-friendly festivities at the Macclesfield Sporting Complex, including a live band, the magnificent Australian Open singles trophies, a fundraising auction, a special appearance from popular children’s character SpongeBob SquarePants and lots of prizes and giveaways.
Dinner is included in the $25 entry fee for Adults, $10 for children (under 16) and $60 family (2 adults, 2 children) ticket. All proceeds will go towards the development of a new Macclesfield Tennis and Netball clubhouse.
On Sunday 16 March Watervale has chosen a classic carnival theme for their celebration, complete with a dunking machine and baby animal petting zoo, alongside tennis activities such as MLC Tennis Hot Shots, Cardio Tennis and speed serve. This event is free of charge.
Later in the evening a Legend’s Dinner is being held at Artisans Table Wine Bar and Bistro for $80 per person including door prizes, silent auction, interviews with Fitzy and Todd, local wines and three course meal.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the development of new Watervale tennis courts

The AO Blitz is a national participation campaign in which thousands of people around Australia take part in online challenges to earn points for their town. In 2013 more than 100 towns across the country held free community tennis days, set a challenge to find the fastest local serve and were visited by the Australian Open trophies.
The leader board of 256 top-scoring Aussie towns was set just prior to the tournament, with each town awarded its own main draw player to cheer for. The AO Blitz is a grassroots program encouraging anyone and everyone to pick up a racquet and have a hit.
