The 15/u Regional State Team last week headed to Brisbane to play in the QLD Teams Carnival which included a teams and individual aspect. The team was represented by three girls and three boys – Georgie Rowett, Sarah Edwards, Jessica Klatt, Patrick Mitchell, Hamish Crawford and Brayden Doherty. The team was reluctant to work together in the early stages but eventually turned out to be a tight knit unit which was hard to beat out on court.
Day one was cancelled due to inclement weather so the team hit the lanes for some team bonding and bowling. The team then prepared for the next big day ahead.
Day two the team hit the courts after a long rain delay. It was a great team effort by all, unfortunately the team was unable to get over the line in some tight battles against strong opponents in Metro C, NSW North and Gold Coast. The individual event followed with four of the six players making it through qualifying to the main draw.
Day three was played in perfect sunny conditions with schedule of play starting on time. The team started off slow going down to Metro A but were able to pull it together to get two victories on the board against Sunshine Coast and North Queensland. The players then hit the court for the individual event, with all players unfortunately losing in main draw after well contested battles.
Day four the team came out to play winning both their matches comfortably against Central and South Queensland, only dropping 3 sets. This set up the team to play for 9th place in the teams event with 16 teams competing in the competition. The afternoon saw a rematch from the South Australian Foundation Cup final with Patrick Mitchell and Hamish Crawford playing off in the Qualifying Consolation final. Patrick came out on top defeating Hamish 4-1 1-4 10-5.
Day five saw the Regional State Team play their last match for the event. The team unfortunately couldn’t take their tally to five wins straight losing to North Queensland by 1 game in an epic battle. This resulted in the team finishing in 10th place.
The week was a great effort by all. Tennis SA wish the players the best of luck in their tennis future and hope to see them out on court soon.
