The South Australian town of Two Wells has cemented themselves as a champion of Australian Open 2016, earning their status as one of Australia’s most tennis-loving towns.

As part of a Tennis Australia participation campaign clubs around Australia hosted Free Tennis Days, opening up their clubs to the local community and encouraging people of all ages and abilities to pick up a racquet and have a hit.

By hosting a Free Tennis Day clubs earned points for their town, with extra points earned for every person in attendance on the day. The top points-scoring towns were awarded with maindraw singles players to support on court at Australian Open 2016. Two Wells Tennis Club was paired with Angelique Kerber.

The club formed a fan group to support Kerber’s progress in the tournament, and had 16 members travel to Melbourne Park to watch Kerber win her second round match against Alexandra Dulgheru.

“Everyone at the Club is absolutely speechless. What a great role model for the young players at our Club” beamed Club Junior Coordinator, Marie Tapscott.

Kerber’s victory against Serena Williams in the final has landed Two Wells Tennis Club a special visit from the Australian Open trophies Norman Brookes Challenge Cup and Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup to celebrate their win.
