Damian Farinola became the second South Australia to win his first ATP point this week when he battled past fellow Aussie Brian Tran in three tight sets yesterday at the Nyrstar Port Pirie Tennis International. Farinola joins Mislav Bosnjak who also earned his first ATP point on day one.
Brad Mousley was not able to get past Chris O’Connell in a high standard match played in front of a strong crowd. O’Connell broke Mousley at five all in the third set and went on to serve out the match.
Arina Rodionova continued her good form with a strong win over young South Australian Petra Hule. Rodionova is coming off a title victory last week and is brimming with confidence this week in Port Pirie.
West Australian Jess Moore was in fine form with a straight sets win over qualifier Chieh-Yu Hsu while Japanese number two seed Rika Sawayanagi also looks set for a good week after a resounding first round win.
Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty moved through to the doubles semifinals with a straight sets win over fourth seeds Ayukawa and Tanaka of Japan.
Today’s matches will see local boy Daniel Hobart take on fellow young gun Daniel Nolan while Port Lincoln’s Darren Polkinghorne will play seventh seed Dayne Kelly.
In the women’s event Giant Killer Alison Bai takes on South African Chanel Simmonds, Jess Moore is up against Nigina Abduraimova and Arina Rodionova plays Barbora Stefova.
Ash Barty and Casey Dellacqua will be in action after 3pm when they take on the international pairing of Abduraimova and Stefkova.
