On Sunday 28 February, fifteen junior teams from thirteen clubs in the Metropolitan area competed in the Adelaide Club Junior Championships to win the title of being the best junior team in the state for 2015/16. Six teams competed in the girls event and nine teams competed in the boys event. The event was played under Fast 4 rules making the matches quick and exciting with players having to think on their feet.
The girls played a round robin stage playing each team once. The tennis was of a high standard with all teams being competitive. Flagstaff Hill Tennis Club were too strong not dropping a match coming into the final against Southern District rivals Happy Valley Tennis Club who had only dropped one match by a game against Golden Grove. Flagstaff proved too strong in the final not dropping a set to be crowned the champions.
The boys played in a round robin stage with one pool of five teams and another pool of four teams. Pool B standings were locked in early with Goodwood Red Tennis Club too strong, finishing first and Glenunga Tennis Club sitting right behind in second. Pool A saw some tight encounters with Stirling Tennis Club coming up against Goodwood Black in the last round of the round robin stage with neither teams losing a match. Goodwood came out on top winning four rubbers to one. This saw Goodwood Black take first place with Stirling sitting second.
The playoff for first and second, third and fourth saw Goodwood Black take on Glenunga and Goodwood Red take on Stirling. Goodwood Black were pushed by Glenunga but managed to get over the line winning 4-2. In the other match, Goodwood Red were pushed, losing one out of two doubles matches that had come down to sudden death. They were able to pull it back together to win 4-1.
In the final of the boys, the two teams of the same club faced each other. The match was very competitive with high class tennis. In the end the more experienced and older team in Goodwood Black were able to overcome their younger club mates in Goodwood Red, winning 4-1 to be crowned the Champions.
It was a great effort by all, Tennis SA wish the players the best of luck in their tennis future and hope to see them out on court again soon.
