Men’s
In the men’s competition, top of the table Collingrove have moved directly to the grand final following a win over Broadview. The match was tied up at the conclusion of singles matches, with Collingrove recording straight sets victories courtesy of Matt Teivans and Jack Alberton, while Broadview was boosted by wins from Sam Longhurst and Kurtis Willson. Sean Page and Teivans had a convincing 6-1 6-2 victory over Broadview’s Longhurst and Lliam Bishop, whilst Willson and Tim Crichton levelled the match again with a 6-2 6-3 win over Collingrove’s Alberton and Simon Bates. With the match tied on rubbers and sets, Collingrove eventually emerged victorious by just six games.
In the second semi-final, Trinity Gardens has taken The Drive out of contention with a four rubbers to two victory. Li Tu, Andrew Tavella and Sebastian Flock all recorded singles wins to put Trinity in the box seat heading in to the doubles. Jonathan Norodom and Kiichi Ishida won a hard fought doubles battle over Li Tu and James Ma 1-6 7-5 7-6 to keep The Drive in touch, however Tavella and Flock were too strong for Sean Swierk and Theodore Karahalios, taking the final rubber 6-2 6-1.
Trinity Gardens will now take on Broadview in this weekend’s preliminary final for a spot in the grand final to be held on Saturday 12 March. The head to head record is even with both meetings coming down to sets, however Broadview won the latest encounter in round 13, making this a match to watch.
Ladies
In the ladies competition, The Drive took a clean sweep of Tea Tree Gully to move in to the grand final, winning all four singles rubbers in straight sets. Melanie Clayton defeated Leonora Radocaj 6-3 6-1, Melissa Beadman overpowered Amy Yusa 6-1 6-0, Yasmin Glazbrook defeated Simeona Stakic 6-4 6-2, whilst sister, Tiana, held strong against Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz to win 7-6 7-5.
In the second semi-final, Glenlea took a comprehensive victory over Prospect. Olivia Ley got Prospect off to a good start with a 6-4- 6-2 victory over AJ Walters, however Glenlea asserted their ascendency with Brooke Milner, Nikki Milner and Tayla Whitehouse all taking straight sets wins to put their team in a commanding position. Elyse Edwards and Nikki Milner sealed the deal with a 6-1 6-2 win over Isabella Decorso and Sasha Borholm.
Glenlea will now take on Tea Tree Gully in this weekend’s preliminary final. The head to head record sits in favour of Tea Tree Gully, however in their last encounter was an epic battle, with Tea Tree Gully winning by just a single game.
Finals continue this Saturday, 5 March, with the Grand Final to be held on Saturday 12 March at Memorial Drive.
