The Foundation Cup regional teams events was played over the past two days on the courts of the Berri-View Lawn Tennis Club, hosts of the 2016 Foundation Cup in perfect weather conditions.
Six regions, West Coast, Upper Northern, Lower Northern, North East, South East & Hills/Murray/Fleurieu competed in the 13/u Boys, 13/u Girls, 15/u Boys and 15/u Girls teams events.
96 regional kids competed in their respected teams showing great sportsmanship and determination to get points on the board for their region.
13/u Boys and Girls team events saw new regions winning the title this year after Hills/ Murray / Fleurieu won back to back titles in the previous two years in the 13/u boys and girls teams’ event.
West Coast boys took out the 13/u title showing a dominant display of tennis not losing a match and only conceding five sets.
The Lower Northern girls were crowned the 13/u title. Lower Northen knocked of the reigning champs in Hills/Murray/Fleurieu in the 1st round and didn’t look back winning the event by six points.
15/u Girls teams event saw a new winner in Hills/Murray/Fleurieu who knocked off the second placed Lower Northern team in round one winning five rubbers to one, not allowing them the chance to take top position. Hills/Murray/Fleurieu went undefeated only dropping three sets over five matches.
15/u Boys teams event saw a very tight competition from all regions putting in their best efforts to win the title. After coming so close to winning a title in 2015 the 15/u Hills/Murray/Fleurieu boys came back stronger in 2016. South East tested Hills/Murray/Fleurieu in round four losing two rubbers to four. This allowed Hills/Murray/Fleurieu to take the title without dropping a match and only conceding three sets.
One 13/U Boy and Girl were awarded the prestigious Kevin Shwarz Sportsperson award, this award is presented to the boy and girl who show the best sportsmanship on court and is voted on each round by the opposing team.
The winner of the 13/u Boys award was Liam Delaney from South East on 8 votes edging out last year’s runner up Arley Byass from Lower West Coast on 7 votes.
This year the winner of the 13/u Girls award was Chloe O’Dea from Upper Northern on 9 votes edging out 3 nominees who tied at second place on 6 votes.
