Men’s and Women’s State League – Results
Four nail biters in the Men’s State League Competition have highlighted what a competitive competition the 2016/17 State League season is expected to be.
2015/16 Champions Broadview were narrowly beaten by a strong Tea Tree Gully team by one set after rubbers were three sets all. The match of the day was the number one single, where Broadview’s Corey DeCandia overcame Tyson Devine in three sets after taking out a tense third set 7-6.
Devine was able to exact revenge however in the doubles when he paired with fellow young gun Dale Nixon to clinch the tie with a straight sets win over DeCandia and Kurtis Wilson.
Collingrove got their season off to a strong start when they snuck past The Drive by one set after rubbers were locked away at three all. Matt Teivans was Collingrove’s key player on the day with a tight three set win over Stefan Norodom at second single before pairing with Oliver Douglas to cement the overall win when they overcame Stefan and Jonathon Norodom in straight sets.
Seaside made a successful start to the season with another super close win by one set over Kingswood. Kingwood’s Sean Van Rensburg started strongly with a straight sets win over Asykal Azhar at top single. Young Gun Eddie Vo got Seaside ticking along with a straight sets win over Jayden Pacor. Azhar and Sam May were able to clinch the win for Seaside when they paired to overcome Todd McLean and Pacor in straight sets.
In the battle of two powerhouse clubs, Glenlea came out on top of Trinity Gardens by four rubbers to two although games were 60 all. Glenlea’s Damian Farinola and Li Tu battled out a top quality affair at top single with Farinola taking it out in three sets to get Glenlea off to a strong start. Scott Hughes got Trinity’s only singles rubber when he beat James Ma in straight sets.
Farinola paired with Simon Pascoe in the doubles to lock the tie away when they overcame Tu and Ma in straight sets.
In the women’s competition State League newcomer Denman proved competitive in their match against Golden Grove. Denman’s number one Casey Jackson got her team off to a good start with a 7-5 2-0 ret. win over Madison Bishop before Golden Grove hit back to win all rubbers from that point on. Golden Grove’s Kimberly Absalom and Denman’s Jacqui Scott played out the match of the day with Absalom taking the win in two tight sets.
The Drive ladies team were far too strong for Goodwood with a six rubber to love win getting their season off to a very good start. The match of the day was between experience Drive number one Melanie Clayton and Goodwood Young Gun Brooke Milner who fought out a tight three set match with Clayton prevailing. The match proved to set the tone for the day and The Drive ran away with the win.
Seaside beat Kingswood in their return the ladies State League competition. Seaside number one Selina Turulja got her team off to a strong start at number one single when she beat Natasha Russell in straight sets. For Kingswood it was Yasmin Glazbrook who stood strong with an impressive straight sets win over Amy Yusa at third single.
In a replay of the Winter Pennant Premier League final, Trinity overcame Glenlea with a solid five rubbers to one win. Olivia Ley was in strong form with a straight sets win over Jovana Petrov. Yasmin Bennett flew the flag for Trinity with their only rubber win when she proved too good for Olivia Salvatore.
