Each year the City of Holdfast Bay invites recreation and sports clubs to nominate their club for the “Club of the Year Award”. Clubs are asked to complete a submission outlining how they have demonstrated the following elements:
- Fostered participation within the community
- Demonstrated innovation
- Enabled opportunities for a diverse range of participants
- Had broad community appeal; and
- Demonstrated good governance
It is with great pleasure to hear that the council has awarded Somerton Park Tennis Club as this year’s winner of the ‘Club of the Year Award’. As winners of the award the club receives a $500 Rebel Sport Gift Voucher to purchase much needed equipment for the club.
The Somerton Park Tennis Club offers both a summer and winter competition. The club have invested a significant amount of time with their coaching program, with competition for beginners (orange ball), juniors, seniors and premier teams. The Orange Ball (Junior Program) has the largest number of participants in the district along with the after school tennis program which sees 50 plus players attend the clinics.
Somerton Park Tennis Club also provides an inclusion program for the visually impaired. Students aged 5-12 years participate in this program each week. This is a fantastic service to offer the community, enabling the visually impaired to be a part of a safe and welcoming environment that is enjoyed by the children and coaches.
Recently, the club worked with Council administration to establish and implement their strategic plan, this is in line with the Office for Recreation and Sport’s STARCLUB Governance program to ensure sustainability on and off the court.
Congratulations Somerton Park Tennis Club for all your hard work and we wish you continued success in 2017.
