Edward Vo (Croydon Park, SA) is the 2016 14-and-under Australian champion, after taking out the boys’ title at Melbourne Park today.
Forced inside due to rain, South Australia’s No.1 13-year-old defeated Chen Dong (QLD) 6-2 6-2 to win the tournament.
Vo, seeded 15th, dropped just one set en route to winning his second Australian junior title for 2016, after taking out the 12-and-under Australian Grasscourt Championship in April.
After taking the first set 6-2, Vo continued to hold the momentum and following an injury timeout for his opponent, took a 5-2 lead in the second set with a backhand winner down the line. Vo then completed the match in the same way, taking the second set 6-2 to win the championship.
“I feel great. I was expecting myself to maybe reach at least round three (in this event) but then the way I was performing today and throughout this whole tournament, I was playing well. And then that gave me the
self-confidence to keep on winning,” Vo said following the match.
“The team at Tennis SA are delighted to congratulate Eddie on his win today,” Steven Baldas, Tennis SA CEO said.
“Eddie has had an outstanding year and it is fantastic to see our young players performing so admirably on the national stage.”
Vo will now remain in Melbourne to take his place in the South Australian squad for this weekend’s 14-and-under Australian Teams Championship.
