Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz (Glengowrie, SA) is the 2016 12-and-under Australian champion, after taking out the girls’ title at Melbourne Park today.
South Australia’s No.1 12-year-old defeated third seed, Hana Sonton (QLD), to win the tournament and become the state’s second national champion in two weeks.
Top seed, Kempenaers-Pocz didn’t drop a set and lost only 19 games in her six matches en route to winning her maiden Australian junior title.
After taking the first set 6-1, Kempenaers-Pocz continued to hold the momentum, swiftly making her way through the second set to win the championship 6-1 6-0.
“I felt good and I felt relaxed, I put no pressure on myself. I stayed composed, I didn’t show her anything and I played well.”
“I wasn’t playing as well as I could have during the week, but today was definitely one of my better days,” Kempenaers-Pocz said following the match.
“The team at Tennis SA are delighted to congratulate Charlotte on her win today,” Steven Baldas, Tennis SA CEO said.
“At such a young age, Charlotte has had some outstanding results and it is great to see another of our young players performing so wonderfully on the national stage.”
Kempenaers-Pocz will now return to Adelaide for a break over Christmas before resuming tournament play in the New Year.
