Alex Bolt (Murray Bridge, SA) and Bradley Mousley (Wynn Vale, SA) are through to the Australian Open men’s doubles quarterfinals, following a three-set victory in Melbourne yesterday.
Bolt and Mousley defeated the American team of Sam Querrey and Donald Young.
After a solid 7-5 opening set from the South Australians, Querrey/Young worked hard to break the momentum, taking the second set 6-3. Bolt/Mousley came out of the blocks strong in the third set taking the opening break, however the Americans edged their way back in to contention before Bolt/Mousley eventually claimed victory, 7-5 3-6 7-5.
With doubles world rankings of 512 and 330 respectively, this is Bolt’s fourth time competing at the Australian Open, whilst Mousley is making his main draw debut. For Bolt, this is just his second professional tournament following a nine-month hiatus from the sport.
In previous matches, Bolt/Mousley defeated Robin Haase (NED) and Florian Meyer (GER) 6-3 5-7 6-4 in the first round and took out the fifteenth seeds, Rohan Bopanna (IND) and Pablo Cuevas (URU) 2-6 7-6(2) 6-4 in the second round.
Bolt and Mousley join fellow Australians Marc Polmans (Vic) and Andrew Whittington (Vic) in the quarterfinals, with the possibility of John Peers (Vic), Sam Groth (Vic) and Chris Guccione (Vic) joining them pending today’s matches.
“We are proud to have two South Australians in Alex and Brad enjoying such outstanding Australian Open results,” said Steven Baldas, Tennis SA CEO.
“We wish them all the very best of luck for their next match and look forward to cheering them on from back home.”
Bolt and Mousley will take on the Spanish pairing of Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Tuesday for a place in the semifinals.
