In the Boy’s competition Coromandel Valley hosted rivals Goodwood in the first final. Goodwood’s number one Josh Laka hit the court first against Olley Douglas and showed his team some leadership defeating his tough opponent 6-4. With the strength of Coromandel Valley having three players who could play at number one made it hard for Goodwood at rubbers two and three.
Coromandel Valley’s Sean Van Rensburg and Sam Sanderson both had strong wins only dropping three games between them. Goodwood’s Ben Cahill went out to tie up the rubbers going into the doubles. Despite his best efforts Luke Mascione held off the dangerous Cahill winning 7-6. Heading into doubles Coromandel Valley had the lead 3-1 and continued so winning both doubles 6-0 and 7-5. Coromandel Valley will now prepare for the big dance while Goodwood will prepare for their opponents in the elimination final.
In the first elimination final Trinity Gardens came up against Glenunga. Trinity Gardens held a strong 2-0 lead over Glenunga in the regular season and looked to make it 3-0. Captain and number one player for Trinity Gardens Jared Waterman defeated a strong player in Alex Carroll 6-3 and Callum Gale kept that run going at number two winning 6-2.
The pressure was now on Glenunga to get on the board or Trinity would run away with the match. Glenunga’s number three David Jung didn’t seem too phased by the pressure that was on him defeating his opponent Luka Ilic 6-2. Gelunga’s Ben Kelly then played in the rubber of the night defeating Tay Crawford-Sandison 7-6 and equaling the rubbers before the doubles would be played.
The doubles ran in similar fashion with the top doubles going Trinity’s way with a 6-3 win to Jared Waterman and Zac Nurton. The match came down to Trinity’s Callum Gale and Luka Ilic against Alex Carroll and Ben Kelly where both pairings went blow for blow with Trinity having the final blow winning 7-6 and eliminating Glenunga from finals. Trinity will now look ahead for their match against Goodwood.
In the Girls competition Goodwood looked to redeem themselves after losing the last minor round and not being able to reach the undefeated season milestone. What seems to be the dream team with the lineup of Nikki Milner, Evana Bowell, Marit Gillam and Erica Williams prove to remain the strongest team in the competition this season.
Happy Valley travelled to Goodwood looking for an upset against the team they have been unable to beat this season but Goodwood had other ideas not allowing this to happen defeating their opponent’s six rubbers to none.
Happy Valley will now to look to redeem themselves in an elimination final against Trinity Gardens so they can face off against Goodwood in the Grand Final for one last time.
