Brazilian number one seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia got her campaign off to a strong start yesterday at the Honeycomb.Design Clare Valley Tennis International. In hot conditions Haddad-Maia proved too strong from the baseline for Brit Freya Christie winning 6-4 6-1. Haddad-Maia was joined in the second round by seeded players Kristie Ahn (USA) and Akiko Omae (JPN) who both had straight sets wins.

Unfortunately Australians Kimberley Birrell and Genevieve Lordbergs were not able to progress to the second round after both were beaten in straight sets. Birrell will be ruing missed opportunities after holding set points in the second set tiebreak before going down 3-6 6-7(9).

Today will see in form Aussie youngster Destanee Aiava in action first up at 10am when she meets British player, Katy Dunne. Sara Tomic also starts her main draw campaign at 10am in her match up against Aussie wildcard Gabriella Da Silva Fick and Storm Sanders and Abbie Myers will be another all Aussie match up for the strong local crowds to enjoy.
