Junior State League – Results
The Junior State League Preliminary Finals were competed over the last two Friday’s where teams competed for that last ticket into the Grand Final. Goodwood Girls and Coromandel Valley boys have already won their spot into the inaugural Junior State League Final and will await to see their competition.
In the Girl’s Competition, Trinity Gardens who won their way through to the Preliminary Final, travelling to Happy Valley who lost to Goodwood. Happy Valley have been second best to Goodwood all season and looked to redeem themselves to give them one last opportunity at overcoming the dominate beast that Goodwood is.
Happy Valley took a leaf out of Goodwood’s book and showed Trinity Gardens why they have been in second place for the majority of the season. Trinity Gardens were weakened by the absence of their top player Amber Marshall. After finishing the season with a win against Goodwood and being the only team to do so all year, Trinity wasn’t able to do so against Happy valley.
With the team lead by Heidi Evans and followed by Cydney Crumbie, Ebony Harper and Chenoa Norris the team did not lose a set giving the team a six rubbers to none win and only dropping thirteen games. Happy Valley will now prepare themselves once again for Goodwood which hopes to be an epic battle.
In the Boy’s Competition, Goodwood hosted Trinity Gardens who were looking to overcome a Goodwood team that had been sitting in second place for majority of the season. Both teams arrived with their strongest list of players giving no one an easy pathway to the big dance.
Goodwood’s number one Josh Laka kicked things off against Trinity Gardens Captain Jared Waterman, Laka kept his composure and showed why he is one of the league’s top ten players winning 6-3.
Trinity Gardens number two Callum Gale had a tough opponent in Stefan Bianchet who he defeated 6-3. This was then followed by another win for Trinity Gardens in similar fashion by Zac Nurton winning 6-3. Goodwood’s Ben Cahill tied rubbers up when he defeated Noah Koeroessy 6-4.
In the doubles, Trinity Gardens Jared Waterman and Zac Nurton paired up in the top doubles against the Karahalios brothers winning convincingly 6-2. This left the result of the match up to the bottom doubles. Goodowoods Josh Laka and Doni Gashi paired up against Callum Gale and Luka Ilic. Gale and Ilic took advantage of the momentum their team had and kept it going in an upset which saw Trinity gardens winning 6-3 and giving the team a four rubbers to two win.
Trinity Gardens now knocking off two teams in the finals, they will look to achieve the biggest upset of the season in trying to defeat Coromandel Valley.
Finals will be held at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre on Friday 17 March at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend and spectate, particularly for the Junior Award Presentations, which will occur prior to the Grand Final matches at 6.15pm.
