Junior State League Girl’s Round 3

Seacliff 6-48 def. Happy Valley 0-16

Round 3 of the Junior State League Girl’s competition kicked off at the Seacliff Tennis Club.  It was blustery, tricky conditions, and it was the home team that seemed to adjust quicker and more effectively.  Jasmine Adams continued on her merry way, and solidified her fantastic start to the season by beating the Happy Valley skipper Heidi Evans 9-4 in the top single.  It was then Crumbie (9-3), Harper (9-1) and Riessen (9-5) who consolidated for Seacliff to give them a match winning lead heading into the doubles.   Despite some fight from Evans and Weatherall for Happy Valley in the top double, it would prove a disappointing night for the Happy Valley girl’s dropping all 6 rubbers.  Seacliff, again without the injured Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz, proved they are the early season premiership favourites, continuing their undefeated start to the season, and sitting pretty atop the ladder after round 3.

West Lakes 2-29 def. by Goodwood 4-41

Down at West Lakes, the conditions weren’t any kinder for the players.  It was Goodwood’s Erica Williams adjusting quickly, and rolling on with strong early season form, to win the top single (9-1).  Andrea Kristo would make it two from two for ‘The Saints’ with a marathon match against West Lakes Madison Schwarz (9-7).   Chloe Schwarz (West Lakes) then gave the home side a sniff with a superb win against the talented Laila McColl (9-2).   However, Alexis Kentwell put the win within arm’s reach for the Goodwood side with a win (9-3) in the fourth single.  Unfortunately for West Lakes, Williams and Kristo would prove too strong in the top double, beating Lee and Carmichael (6-2) and sealing the deal for the reigning champs to get them back on track with their second win for the season.  The West Lakes girl’s fought it out strongly, winning the second double by the skin of their teeth (7-6).  West Lakes will be looking to atone strongly next week to stay around the mark, while Goodwood will look to continue moving towards a top 2 position.

Peake Gardens-Riverside 3-40 def. Hahndorf 3-31

In the final match-up for the Girl’s JSL round 3 fixture, Peake-Garden’s Riverside hosted Hahndorf in what would prove a very close battle, with a fight for a top 2 position.  Kara Tscharke (Hahndorf) proved she’s one of the best players in the comp, beating young-gun Meeka Marshall in the top single (9-6).  Hayley Waterman then returned serve for ‘The Slugs’, in a fantastic performance, defeating Hahndorf’s Juliette Robinson (in her first showing of the season) (9-1).   After Tobin (9-7) and Smith (9-6) took out the third and fourth singles, things were looking rosey for Hahndorf with a 3-1 lead heading in to the doubles.  At this stage Peake-Gardens could have been forgiven for dropping their heads and losing gallantly.  However, they proved how important a good doubles pairing can be, with the Marshall sisters putting on a clinic in the top double (6-1), with Waterman and Tsoukalas finishing off the huge comeback in the second double (6-2).  At the end of the day it would be Peake Gardens-Riverside sneaking in to the top 2, with Hahndorf licking their wounds after a disappointing loss.

Junior State League Boy’s Round 3

Coromandel Valley 6-49 def. Trinity 0-28

In the first match of Round 3 for the Boy’s Junior State League, it was an early season top-of-the-table grudge match, with the reigning premiers Coromandel Valley playing host to the undefeated Trinity Titans.  With Van Rensburg away, Ollie Douglas (Coromandel Valley) stepped up and did battle with Round 2 ‘Player of Year’ leader Jared Waterman (Trinity).  These two played some high-class tennis, but at the end of the day it would be Douglas winning his first game as the top single (9-7) in what would set the tone for the rest of the night.  From there the ever-reliable Sam ‘The Glue’ Sanderson would continue on his path as genuine chance for back-to-back ‘Player of the Year’ titles winning the second single (9-5).  Young talents Patrick Douglas (9-6) and Edward Winter (9-3) then continued the winning trend for the Coro boy’s giving them the unassailable 4-0 lead heading in to the doubles.   Trinity never laid down, with Waterman and Gale stretching Sanderson and Patrick Douglas to the limit in the top double.  However, they just went down (6-7).  Mascione and Burley then finished strongly for Coro with a (6-1) victory in the last double of the night.  In the end, it was a bit of a reality check for the Trinity boy’s, dropping their first match of the year, while, as was the case last week, the Coro juggernaut keeps marching on.

Seacliff 3-42 def. Seaside 3-38

Seacliff hosted their name-sake counterparts in what was arguably the match of the round, and what a way it was for this match-up to get underway.  In the first single, you would have been forgiven for thinking they were playing in perfect conditions, with Terry Karahalios and Anton Talladira playing some exhilarating tennis.  After trading blows in what proved a genuine endurance event, it would be fan favourite Karahalios producing when it mattered, to sneak over the line (9-8). After that it was Seacliff rebounding strongly with Kristo Daminato (9-6) and Noah Koeroessy (9-2) getting the chocolates.  Nikolai Dobrovolski would then tie it up and two each with a strong (9-6) win over future star Lachlan Brain.  Tied up after the singles, it was clear this battle would go right down to the wire.  Karahalios and Gashi put Seaside in the box seat with a (6-3) win in the first single.  This ensured that the winner of the final double would take out the match-up, and when the final siren went it would be the class of Daminato and Brain sneaking over the line (7-6) to give the Seacliff fellas a win and breathe new life into their season.  Seaside proved unlucky, and will be very keen to get back on the winners list in round 4.

Hahndorf 3-37 def. by Peake Gardens-Riverside 3-43

Peake Gardens-Riverside took a road trip into the hills for this match-up, which took place at the picturesque Hahndorf tennis club.  With the weather holding off, spectators were treated to yet another incredibly close match-up.  In an interesting result, this match was a genuine illustration of momentum.  It was Peake Gardens-Riverside crew mirroring Usain Bolt, getting out of the blocks at light-speed and winning the first three rubbers.  Ben Cahill (9-3), William Taylor (9-6) and Pierce Hynes (9-6) were the catalysts for the strong start playing some exhilarating tennis in the tough conditions.  In what would then almost be ‘comeback of the century’, Hahndorf flicked the switch beginning with Tomas Barry taking out the fourth single (9-6).  Crawford and Pienaar then carried on Hahndorf’s new ‘wave of momentum’ winning their top double in a nail-biter (7-6). Crawford-Sandison and Barry then made it the last three rubbers for Hahndorf, getting up (6-4) in the last double.  However, Hahndorf would just fall short by 6 games, with ‘The Slugs’ getting it done away from home and finding themselves in the top 4.

Tea Tree Gully 6-48 def. Glenunga 0-16

The final match of the Boy’s round 3 Junior State League was a one-sided one.  The Glenunga side travelled up to Tea Tree Gully, but it would prove a long night for them.  Dale Nixon was all class, winning the top single against David Wang (9-1).  The strength of Carroll (9-2), Gibson (9-3) and Lamchinniah (9-3) was too much for the Glenunga boy’s to contain, with TTG taking a 4-0 lead after the completion of the singles rubbers.  Nixon and Caroll were a great duo in the top double, continuing the TTG run over Glenunga’s Wang and Catalano (6-3).  Gibson and Lamchinniah then completed the TTG clean sweep and sending a warning signal to the rest of the competition.   Glenunga are left to lick their wounds, and will be keen to bounce back next week.  They certainly have the talent in their list and will be looking to get into the winners circle.  Tea Tree Gully on the other hand have started the season exceptionally, and are looking the most likely to stop Coromandel Valley in their bid for back-to-back flags.  Unfortunately, we will have to wait until the round 7 ‘Super Round’ at Playford to see them do battle.
