The opening round of the Competitive Metro Mid-Week Comp kicked off Wednesday night at the picturesque Memorial Drive Centre Courts.
The weather was good, the setting was good, and the tennis was fantastic. It was great to get some of the high-quality players in Adelaide out playing competition tennis on a weeknight. Many were using this Term 4 Metro Mid-Week comp as a tune up for the weekend, or as an opportunity to get a competitive hit when unavailable to play weekends at a fantastic facility.
In the first round Henley proved too strong for Pembroke on this occasion, led by Heath Johnston at number one, who was in great form. Sam Von Einem and Rhys Johnston followed suit for Henley with a two set victory each, but Matt Adams ensured Henley didn’t have it all their own way, pushing Matt Tregoweth to a third set match tiebreak. The doubles were a tough battle, with some great rallies and close points with Henley just getting the chocolates and starting the season strongly.
On the other two courts it was Prospect taking on a Tennis SA combined side. The score line made it look like a one-side battle but in reality, it was anything but. TSA were led strongly by Matt Fitzgerald coming back for his first competitive hit-out for some time. He took on young-gun Alastair Umpherston, and despite not having it all his own way, he proved too strong winning in two sets.
Ty Allen and James Underwood played out an absolute nail-biter, with Allen prevailing on the final point of the Match Tiebreak set. Becket Wolfe put on a serving masterclass winning in two sets, and Hicks and Noicos went the distance, with the craftiness of Hicks getting him over the line in, yet again, the final point of the Match Tiebreak set. Fitzgerald and Allen were too good in the top double, but Hicks and Wolfe were made to earn their win, with Umpherston and Noicos taking the last rubber, again, to the final point of the Match Tiebreak set.
It was great to see so many even matches in a high-quality standard mid-week competition. We look forward to a great season ahead!
