Junior State League Girls Round 7

Goodwood 3-31 def. West Lakes 3-25

After a rained out evening in round 6 it was great to get the Junior State League back underway in round 7, and it commenced with an absolute thriller! West Lakes travelled down to Goodwood and it went down to the wire.  Madison Schwarz started strongly for West Lakes winning the top single 9-6.  Erica Williams returned beautifully for Goodwood winning to love.  McColl continued that fashion in convincing fashion for the home side.  The doubles were split one each with Pavlic and Williams doing it comfortably in the top double, and the Schwarz sisters combining strongly for West Lakes in the second.  It came down to games, and on this occasion Goodwood were just a touch too strong for a valiant West Lake outfit.

Hahndorf 2-31 def. by Peake Gardens-Riverside 4-43

Hahndorf hosted the Peake Gardens girls and on paper it looked like Peake would be too strong, and it did end up turning out that way, but it was a tough battle all night.  Meeka Marshall, Hayley Waterman and Mia Tsoukalas got the Peake girls off to a great start.  Jacqueline Smith played superbly, and got Hahndorf on the board in the final single.   The doubles were split again, with Tscharke and Tobin grinding out a tough win (7-6) for Hahndorf.  However, Tsoukalas and Coombes finished off a good nights work for Peake with a (6-1) win in the final double.

Happy Valley 2-21 def. by Seacliff 4-44

Happy Valley played at home this week against the powerful Seacliff outfit.  Heidi Evans put an upset on everyone’s mind with a brilliant 9-8 win over the talented Jasmine Adams.   From there Seacliff reasserted themselves with Crumbie (9-3), Harper (9-2) and Riessen (9-0) putting the away side back in the box seat.  The doubles were, you guessed it, split one each.  Evans and Weatherall were a terrific combination for the home side winning (6-3), while Harper and Riessen kept Seacliff undefeated with a (6-1) win.

Junior State League Boys Round 7

Seaside 6-49 def. Tea Tree Gully 0-38

The boy’s round kicked off with a massive upset!  Seaside found another gear at home with an incredible display upsetting the previously second placed Tea Tree Gully.  Terry ‘Crowd Favourite’ Karahalios took on Dale ‘The Sherriff’ Nixon in the top single and it was a cracker.  Crowd Favourite won the big points in the big moments to get up (9-8) and set the tone for the Seaside side.  From there Gashi (9-7), Dobrovolski (9-6) and Lambert (9-7) would, incredibly, make it a singles clean sweep for Seaside in a fantastic display.  From there they took great confidence into the doubles and finished off their work winning every rubber, and making the rest of the competition stand up and take notice.  Tea Tree Gully will be keen to get Alex Carroll back and regroup next week.

Trinity 2-23 def. by Seacliff 4-43

The upset trend continued in the boy’s Junior State League with Seacliff continuing some good recent form to defeat the more fancied Trinity.  Bianchet continued his stellar season with a solid 9-3 win over the popular Jared Waterman.  Grohbruegge moved up to number two, in the absence of Gale, and didn’t disappoint with a 9-5 win.  Brain (9-4) and Reichelt (9-0) got the job done with some great tennis for Seacliff.  Waterman and Grohbruegge toughed out a solid 7-5 win for Trinity in the top double, but Seacliff finished strongly with Koeroessy and Brain putting on a doubles masterclass.  Trinity will be keen to bounce back next week and Seacliff continue their march towards the top 2.

Glenunga 4-39 def. Hahndorf 2-36

A close match up took place at Glenunga with both sides searching for their first win, and it went down to the wire.  Big Crows fan, Hamish Crawford, got the Hahndorf side off to a great start, with a 9-4 win over Glenunga skip David Wang.  However, it would be Jung (9-7), Cleland (9-8) and Curyer (9-0) getting it done for Glenunga and putting them in the box seats heading into the doubles.  Crawford and Crawford-Sandison got Hahndorf back into the match in the top double (6-1), but it would be Glenunga tasting victory at the end of the night, with Cleland and Vinel (7-6) getting them over the line.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see Glenunga get on a roll from here and cause some upsets as head toward the Christmas break.

Peake Gardens-Riverside 0-6 def. by Coromandel Valley 6-48

This match probably doesn’t need a great deal of analysis.  Unfortunately for Peake Gardens, they needed to be at full strength to challenge Coro, and with their two best players unavailable, it was a touch one-sided.  Van Rensburg (9-0), Douglas (9-0), ‘The Glue’ Sanderson (9-0) and Winter (9-4) were all at the top of their game for Coromandel Valley in the singles.  That form continued in a similar vein in the doubles with Coro producing a clean sweep. Peake will be keen to regain Cahill and Taylor next week to stay in touch with the top 4, while at this stage it appears to be Coromandel Valley then daylight in the boy’s division.  However, with some of the other sides starting to find form, there’s still plenty for the Coro juggernaut to think about as we near the half way point of the season.
