Memorial Drive (women) and Trinity Gardens (men) have finished the Tennis SA State League season victorious following rain interrupted finals at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre.

In the women’s, Memorial Drive were pushed to their limits by a young Goodwood side, before their experience shone through to see them take home back-to-back premierships before the rain set in on Sunday afternoon.

“Really tough match today, really close and tense. It probably feels even better to win the close ones, Goodwood played fantastic and really took it to us right to the end,” Memorial Drive team captain, Michelle Leyden said.

“The club have been very supportive and we appreciate them being behind us and enabling us to play.”

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, rain held the match at two rubbers a piece overnight before Trinity Gardens defeated Collingrove in the doubles on Monday evening to claim the premiership.

“It was a bit of a nervous night just waiting to play. We had in our minds that we were coming to get a result on Sunday and go home with a result, but it didn’t happen,” Trinity Gardens team captain, Andrew Tavella said.

“The win means a lot. The club has got a really good junior program and we are trying to promote juniors into our team. The club gives us a lot of support so it means a lot to everyone, not just us.”

Tennis SA CEO Steven Baldas was thrilled to congratulate the winning teams.

“We are very proud to congratulate our 2017/18 Tennis SA State League champions, Memorial Drive and Trinity Gardens,” Baldas said.

“Both teams have had a fantastic season finishing on top of the ladder following the home and away rounds and they thoroughly deserve this outstanding result.”
