Tennis SA played host to the 2017/18 Tennis SA State League Grand Final over the weekend.

In the women’s, Memorial Drive were pushed to their limits by a young Goodwood side, before their experience shone through to see them take home back-to-back premierships before the rain set in on Sunday afternoon.

In the number one match, Goodwood’s Tayla Whitehouse got her team off to an outstanding start with a 6-4 6-4 win over Mel Clayton. Alana Repanich then levelled the scoreboard with a 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Leonora Radocaj.

Memorial Drive went in to the doubles with a 3-1 lead, following Mel Beadman defeating Natasha Russell 6-3 6-1 and Lucy Steinberner’s win over Issy Ryles,  6-3 6-1.

Goodwood started the doubles strongly, taking the first set in both matches, however Memorial Drive took both of the second sets to secure the premiership, 3-8-68 to 1-5-49.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, the results could not have been any closer with both teams neck-and-neck throughout the final.

For Trinity, Li Tu defeated Oliver Douglas 7-5 6-3 and Callum Gale overcame Simon Bates 7-6 6-3. However, the three set battles of the day went the way of Collingrove with Matthew Teivans defeating Andrew Tavella 3-6 7-6 6-4 and Sam Holland-Smith defeating Charlie Nicholas 7-6 6-7 7-5.

As if the score line wasn’t dramatic enough, rain then set in to hold the match at two rubbers a piece overnight.

Needing just the one doubles victory to get the team over the line, the Trinity pairing of Scott Hughes/Tavella defeated Teivans/Holland-Smith 6-4 6-3 on Monday evening to claim the premiership.

Tennis SA would like to thank all clubs, players and volunteers that participated in the State League season.

We wish you luck over the winter and hope to see you back next season.
