After taking home the Most Outstanding Event award at last week’s Tennis SA Awards Dinner, it has been announced that the City of Playford Tennis International will return in 2019, offering USD$75,000 in prizemoney and significant world ranking points.

Tennis SA and Tennis Australia, in conjunction with the City of Playford, TennisGear and The Grove Tennis Club, will host the Australian Pro Tour event from Monday 31 December 2018 to Sunday 6 January 2019.

The brand new international-standard Playford City Tennis Centre will once again play host to the combined Men’s Challenger and Women’s ITF Futures tournament following an extremely successful inaugural event in January 2018.

The event has in the past attracted the likes of world No.48 Daniil Medvedev (RUS), former world No.2 Vera Zvonareva (RUS) and South Australia’s very own world No.179 Alex Bolt.

“We are delighted to stage the City of Playford Tennis International at the Playford City Tennis Centre again in 2019, a superb new venue which the players really enjoy competing at,” said Tennis Australia’s Head of Tournaments and Officiating, Isabelle Gemmel.

“The event provides an ideal lead-in for players preparing to compete in an Australian Open Series event and the first grand slam of the year, Australian Open 2019.”

City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty says the tournament in the heart of Playford’s Sports Precinct is one of the highlights of the city’s sporting calendar.

“Our Council is excited to once again host the highest level professional event in South Australia, the City of Playford Tennis International.”

“The feedback we received from players, business, tourism operators and attendees was fantastic and local shops enjoyed increased trade and foot traffic during the event.”

The City of Playford Tennis International will once again form a major part of South Australia’s World Tennis Challenge (WTC) Be Active Challenge events, set to take place throughout January.

“Tennis SA is thrilled to confirm that the City of Playford Tennis International will return to South Australia’s summer of tennis and the WTC Be Active Challenge for 2019,” said Tennis SA CEO Steven Baldas.

“A sincere thank you goes to the City of Playford for their unwavering support of this tournament. The Playford City Tennis Centre is a state-of-the-art, world-class venue and Tennis SA is excited to see the tournament grow again in 2019.”

The field for the City of Playford Tennis International will be announced later this year.
