Friday 19 October saw the 1st round of the 10/U Green Ball State League with the Boy’s and Girl’s playing super rounds at Tennis World Millswood and Peake Gardens-Riverside Tennis Club.

This is the first time Tennis SA has delivered this competition, which is exciting for junior tennis as some of the best 9 and 10 year olds in Adelaide played off. This is not only exciting for the sport but exciting for the participants as they are playing kids the same age, similar ability and on the correct Green Ball which is beneficial for their development.

Each team has 2 players and they play Fast4 short game sets timed at 30 minutes per match. Each match involves a top singles, a doubles and a reverse singles. At the end of each timed match the player who has won the most games in their match will win the set.

In the boys, Pembroke played off against Stirling where Pembroke’s Ari Lewis-Kelly got off to an ideal start winning 6-5 over Henry Hartwig and in a very close second singles, it ended in a 6-6 draw with both teams receiving half a point. After that it was all Pembroke winning comfortably in the doubles and first reverse singles to give them a first round win.

McLaren Vale and Trinity played off in a very close match, with the match coming down to the last set. It was all tied up in the singles with both teams receiving a set each. Trinity were too strong in the doubles winning 8-5, but McLaren Vale’s Sam Scott Young kept them in it with a 10-3 reverse singles win. In the end Trinity were too strong winning the second reverse singles 10-3 and winning 3 sets to 2.

In the match of the round Seacliff played off against O’Halloran Hill. Two matches ended in a draw and it came down to the very last reverse singles with Seacliff’s Tyce Lush winning 7-6 to give Seacliff the win by 1 set.
A very dominant Denman played off against Collingrove winning 4 sets to 1. Lewis Sinclair was very impressive winning all of his sets to set up a comfortable first round win for Denman. Cooper Walton was the stand out for Collingrove winning his first singles 11-4.

In the girls, Collingrove made a statement early with a strong 4 sets to 0 win over ETKG. Lead by Nanami Ottewill who won all of her sets to start her season off well and give Collingrove the win.

Seacliff’s Christina Bennett got off to an ideal start with a 10-0 win in the top singles and her team didn’t look back from there winning every set to give Seacliff a 5 sets to 0 win over Tea Tree Gully.

Denman played off against Pembroke in a close tussle. Denman’s Skye Birdseye won her top singles 6-5 against Pembroke’s Isabella O’Reilly, meanwhile Denman’s Mia Penhall and Pembroke’s Eve Kelly finished with a 6-6 draw to share half a point each. The doubles went to Pembroke, who were able to tie the match up a set all. In the end Denman were too strong winning both their reverse singles and giving their team a 3 sets to 1 win.

All teams return back to their own venues with round 2 kicking off this Friday October 26 at 6:00pm.
