Ten-year-old Eva Schmucker got the surprise of her life on Friday when TennisFest paid a surprise visit to Cowell Area School to announce her as the winner of a TennisFest design competition during a special school assembly.

TennisFest is a 14-day celebration of tennis in South Australia and features 20 events and activations across the state from Thursday 15 to Wednesday 28 November 2018.

The festival aims to showcase the player pathway and provide a variety of opportunities for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to get involved in tennis.

Eva Schmucker entered the state-wide competition for five-to-12 year olds who were encouraged to design a TennisFest polo shirt.

As part of the special Grand Slam surprise for Eva and her school, the two Australian Open trophies, the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup (men’s singles) and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (women’s singles) made a special appearance.

“When the Tennis SA staff were wearing my polo shirt design, I was amazed. I never knew I could win this competition,” Eva said.

“When I held the trophy for the Australian Open, I felt so lucky.”

Travelling from their home at Melbourne Park, Victoria, the two Australian Open trophies were on show for local students to see up close and personal.

Following the school assembly the students took part in an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots School Competition.

ANZ Tennis Hot Shots School Competitions encourage participation in the sport, provide a positive experience playing tennis, grow friendships and give students the opportunity to represent their school in a team environment.

“We are thrilled to have been able to make a special visit to Cowell to surprise Eva,” said Tennis SA CEO, Steven Baldas.

“We loved Eva’s polo shirt design and we were excited to bring it to life.

“A sincere thank you to Cowell Area School and Cowell Tennis Club for their support and for helping us bring TennisFest to Cowell.”
