Memorial Drive have claimed their third straight Statewide Super State League women’s title at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre this afternoon, alongside Glenlea who earlier clinched the men’s title with an emphatic victory.
In the women’s, Memorial Drive were pushed to their limits by Pembroke, before their blend of experience and youth shone through to see them take home their third premiership in a row.
“Today’s match was played in great spirits, the level was very high,” Memorial Drive team captain, Michelle Leyden said.
“It was two-all before the doubles and the doubles were both played to a really high standard. Going in to the doubles, either team could have won.”
Meanwhile in the men’s competition, Glenlea took an unassailable lead after the singles to defeat Broadview and claim the premiership.
“Our team has been pretty solid all year, so it was great to get through (to the grand final) and play a tough team in Broadview,” Glenlea team captain, Jack Schipanski said.
“Through the season, we won one and lost one against them, so to get out there today and have it won after the singles was a pretty good effort.”
Today’s finals marked the last event to be held at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre, prior to redevelopment works commencing in the coming weeks.
Tennis SA CEO Steven Baldas was thrilled to congratulate the winning teams.
“We are very proud to congratulate our 2018/19 Tennis SA State League champions, Memorial Drive and Glenlea,” Baldas said.
“This win takes Memorial Drive to three State League premierships in a row and both teams thoroughly deserve this outstanding result following a fantastic home and away season.”
“We can’t thank Statewide Super enough for their support towards women in sport and the State League. We are proud to partner with such a reputable company like Statewide Super, who share our desire to invest and grow tennis in the community”.
