Glenlea Tennis Club have taken back-to-back Tennis SA State League women’s titles at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre on Sunday afternoon, with the Seacliff Tennis Club men’s team claiming their first ever State League title with an emphatic victory.
In
the women’s, the match was locked at two rubbers all following the singles,
before Glenlea pushed ahead in the doubles to see them take home their second
State League premiership in a row.
“It’s a great feeling
to know that we have been able to win this premiership twice in a row and that
we have such great depth in our team,” Glenlea team captain, Olivia
Ley said.
“It was an extremely tough match! We definitely knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but it was great to get out there and have a battle, they are a really strong team and deserved to be in the final as well.
“It was fantastic
today to play in front of a decent sized crowd and have other people here
watching, it was really nice to experience the full atmosphere.”
Meanwhile in the men’s competition, Seacliff took a three rubbers to one lead in to the doubles before claiming the premiership, the third premiership for the club this season following side-by-side victories by their boys and girls Tennis SA Junior State League teams on Friday night.
“It was pretty tight. It was 50/50 with all the matches, but we dug deep and got the victory in the end,” Seacliff team captain, Mislav Bosnjak said.
“We just went out
there and backed each other in every point. We’ve all learnt something from
each other this season and it’s a really special win for all of us.
“Full credit to the
team and everyone who was out here from Seacliff Tennis Club to support us.”
Tennis SA Leagues
Coordinator Luke Taylor was thrilled to congratulate the
winning teams.
“We
are very proud to congratulate our 2020/21 Tennis SA State League champions,
Glenlea and Seacliff,” Taylor said.
“This
win sees Glenlea take home back-to-back State League premierships and these
results are a credit to both teams.
“A special mention to
the Seacliff Tennis Club who have claimed three out of five Tennis SA State
League premierships on offer this weekend, an outstanding effort.”
