The first UTR Pro Tennis Tour tournament at Next Generation Memorial Drive has come to an end this afternoon with top ranked players Katherine Westbury (NZL) and Dayne Kelly (Vic) claiming the titles.

In the women’s, Westbury defeated Taylah Lawless (NSW) 6-4 7-5 to take the win in just under two hours.

“Today’s match was quite tough, so it was good to get the win. Taylah is a very challenging opponent and there were a lot of ups and downs in the match,” Westbury said.

“I’ve been on and off with a lot of injuries so I haven’t been able to play back-to-back matches for a long time, so to win today was really nice.”

“The week has been great. The UTR format is always nice because you get a lot of matches, but it’s tough on the body. It’s all about recovery now and getting ready for next week.”

In the men’s, Kelly defeated Ashwin Vijayaragavan (SA) 6-2 6-1 in just over one hour and 10 minutes to claim the title.

Westbury and Kelly will lead the fields once again for the second UTR Pro Tennis Tour tournament commencing at 9.00 am on Monday.

Westbury will be joined in the women’s field by South Australian Elim Yan (Toorak Gardens, SA).

Yan, 16, enters the tournament at a career high ITF Junior world ranking of No.239 and in good form having won the girls’ singles title at the Gallipoli Youth Cup just a fortnight ago.

The UTR Pro Tennis Tour events come following the successful rollout of the tour in 2020. The format features a singles only competition for men and women based on Universal Tennis Ratings (UTR), and features a player group round robin followed by a World Cup-style playoff format.

What is a UTR?
Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is an international tennis rating system that connects millions of tennis players around the world to help them find better matches locally. UTR reflects a player’s current skill level based on head-to-head match scores, and rates all players across age, gender and nationality on the same 16-point scale. Every player can have a UTR – from the pros to juniors to social tennis players.
