15 March 2024 | Tennis SA

The beginning of March proved to be a huge weekend at the Kadina Tennis Club, especially for one family who have been heavily involved at the club over many years. Tennis is a unique sport that encourages everyone from all ages and skill levels to participate, and even sees family members playing in a range of competitions.

Earlier this month saw a unique experience at Kadina Tennis Club, having three generations of one family all playing in the same division one grand final team within the NYP Tennis Association.

Max Whiteman was able to play alongside his daughter Jane Whiteman and his grandson Sam Oster. However, the team was not successful in the grand final Max, Jane and Sam were successful in their singles matches on the day.

Max has been a tennis player for many years and continues to astound his opponent’s, defeating players in there teens, twenties and thirties. He is a life member of the club and the current treasurer for at least the past seven years. Max can often be seen out around the club tidying up the area, sorting out cans and rubbish, having a practice hit or helping out the juniors every Thursday.

Jane who is also a life member of the club, has been running the junior program for over 10 years and continues to be involved in all areas of the club. Jane is on the committee, always front and center with helping and organising fundraising and club events and this year has helped the club and association by being the secretary/treasurer of the NYP Junior Association.

Sam, although a little young to hold a life membership, has continued in his grandpa and mum’s footsteps by being heavily involved in the club. Since finishing junior tennis Sam has stepped up as the club coach. Taking on the role of coaching the junior teams every Thursday, while also running the Hot Shots Tennis program for younger players. Sam is also a committee member and this year lead the Kadina team to the Grand Final as captain while also stepping up and being the recording secretary for the NYP Junior Association.

The family have also achieved another unique occurrence for the club, Sam won the Men’s Club Championship for a second time and Jane has won her 15 Women’s Championships. This is not something you will see everyday, when a mother and son share a Club Championship in the same year. Congratulations Jane and Sam!

“The Kadina Tennis club are thankful and proud to have this family involved in the club and look forward to many more years of involvement from all three. Well done on an amazing year and service to club.”
