The National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – SA has returned for the fourth consecutive year, with more than  300 kids participating  across two days.

Tennis SA, with the support of City of Playford, hosted the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – Playford on Thursday 2 May, and the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – The Drive on Sunday 5 May.

eDesigned to promote  tennis participation and cultural engagement among young people across the state, the events attracted unprecedented attendance and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in fostering inclusivity, cultural awareness, and community spirit through the sport.

The  National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – Playford, exceeded all expectations, with 20 schools and 280 students turning out, more than double the numbers from previous years.

This remarkable increase in participation underscores the growing popularity and impact of the carnival. Attendees were treated to a day filled with various activities, including Hot Shots Tennis, coaching lessons and Boomerang Painting delivered by Southern Cultural Immersion, one of the highlights of the day.

The City of Playford provided generous funding and support, which contributed to the resounding success.

The National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – The Drive, kicked off with a dynamic clinic attended by 25 enthusiastic participants and led by State Indigenous coach Jason Todd.

Cultural activities including basket weaving with Micky Barlow, and traditional Aboriginal children’s games facilitated by Walking Together with Kaurna. Both provided a unique opportunity to connect with Indigenous heritage while honing their tennis skills.

“The overwhelming response to this year’s National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – SA is a testament to the power of sports in bringing communities together”, Tennis SA CEO Debbie Sterrey said.

“We are thrilled to see the tremendous growth in participation and the meaningful cultural engagement that took place. Tennis SA remains committed to providing more opportunities for youth, especially from First Nations communities” Sterrey added.

Tennis SA extends its gratitude to all participants, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners who contributed to the success of the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival – SA. Together, we continue to make a positive impact on the lives of young people across South Australia.
