29 September 2010 | Tennis Tasmania

Tasmania’s Pizzey Cup team has returned home after a weather interrupted tournament in Wollongong last week. The team consisting of 8 boys and 8 girls won two of their five scheduled rounds, one being washed out. Tasmania defeated both Western Australia and ACT over the week to finish 4th out of the 6 states and territories competing.

The Jack Pizzey Cup is an annual, secondary school based team event that was last year held at the Domain Tennis Centre in Hobart. This year the tournament was held on GRASS at the Wollongong Tennis Centre.

Team Coach David Tunbridge said despite rain constantly delaying and shortening matches it was an enjoyable week and he was happy with the team’s performance.

Some outstanding performances were seen all through the Tasmanian team particularly from the girls line 1 player Alyssa Hibberd. In her fourth Pizzey Cup, Hibberd went undefeated through the team tournament in both singles and doubles. Hibberd also made the quarter finals of the School Sport Australia Championships, an individual tournament held in conjunction with the Pizzey Cup. This outstanding performance saw Hibberd selected in the “All Australian” team for the fourth year running.
