6 May 2013 | Tennis Tasmania

On a mild day at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre a young and enthusiastic Tasmanian team defeated Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in day one of the Pizzey Cup.

In what was to set the tone for the days play Tasmania jumped out of the blocks early in the doubles and mixed. The senior combination of Captain Ross Marzetti and Bradley Dunn pressured their opponents dropping only the one game en route to an 8-1 victory. Shortly afterward Matthew Harris and Nancy Brown followed suit with an impressive 8-1 win to double the advantage. The remaining matches were much tighter with three identical 8-6 victories. The only blemish was a hard fought 5-8 loss in mixed doubles by Thomas Cornish and Laura Briant. After the six doubles matches Tasmania had jumped out to a 5-1 advantage.

Senior Captain Ross Marzetti quoted “We came ready to play and kept up the intensity the entire doubles. We wanted to send a message to the competition that Tasmania was here to fight”. Girls captain Gabrielle Carswell quoted “We did a great job of keeping our composure. Both girls doubles we were up big and ACT fought back strongly. We were able to steady the ship and play some good tennis to close out both doubles.”

After such a blistering start Tasmania kept its foot on the gas in the singles. Boys singles were first up with pocket rocket Daniel Groom gaining the first singles win at position four over Jon Dufty (ACT) 6-1, 6-3. Shortly after Bradley Dunn defeated Jake Okines (ACT) 6-2, 6-0 in an impressive display of power and timing. Seniors Ross Marzetti (line 3) and Elliot Johnstone (line 1) claimed two more points for Tasmania with hard fought wins over their respective opponents. Elliot was pushed to three sets where Marzetti required two tie breaks to push through. With the score at a 9-1 advantage ACT pulled a point back with a win at number 5; with Martyn Icke dropping a straight sets decision to Michael Bruen. Clinching the tie at number 6, Sam Beckett pulled through a three set marathon, prevailing 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

With the tie decided the young girls squad took aim at their opponents. Big hitting youngster Hannah Coombe was first completed dropping a high quality three set match at number 4. After dropping the first set Coombe stormed back in the second set before eventually succumbing to Chorlida King (ACT) 2-6, 6-4, 0-6. In the number 6 position Kate Bohmer was in her own three set tussle. After splitting the first two sets Bohmer was able to grit it out taking home a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win. Rounding out the girls captain Gabrielle Carswell and senior Victoria Geale took home straight set wins at the 2 and 3 positions and at position’s 1 and 5 Vanessa Dobson and Erin Fazackerley were unable to hang with their opponents, losing in straight sets.

Senior Victoria Geale quoted “What a fantastic way to start our Pizzey Cup this year. The momentum from doubles carried over into singles and we made ACT fight hard for every point”. Likewise senior Bradley Dunn said “I was really impressed from the whole team performance today. We are looking forward to testing our-self against NSW tomorrow”.

With all the singles in the books Tasmania took home an impressive 13-5 match advantage. With the win Tasmania move to 1-0 with defending champion New South Wales on the schedule tomorrow. Play will kick off at 8.30am sharp at Memorial Drive Tennis Centre.
