After a superb weekend of play in overcast conditions the first inaugural Sunshine/Geilston Bay White level Optus Junior Tour tournament is now in the books.

Play started on a brisk morning on the eastern shore of Hobart with many matches set to complete over this shortened two day event. Once again the 12 & Under Boys Singles was at the highest quality with the winning streak continuing for top seeded Ben Cawston (Ulverstone). Cawston is still undefeated on Tasmanian soil this year, although he was heavily tested in the final, defeating future star (5) Samuel Whitehead (Launceston) 7-5, 6-4. In both sets Cawston found himself trailing before gaining traction and storming home for the win. In the doubles another instant classic was produced with top seeded duo Cawston and Robert Green (Ulverstone) defeating second seeded Whitehead and Ruben Mccormack (Launceston) 7-5, 4-6, 11-9. In an all Hobart Girls 12/U singles final top seeded Jessica Chesterman was unfortunately forced to retire through injury handing the title to second seeded Charlotte Ingram.  The hugely talented Ingram went through the preliminary rounds unscathed; not dropping a set en route to the final.

Next up was the 14 & Under boys singles event. After facing some stiff competition (2) Remy Lynch (Hobart) defeated unseeded Jesse Russell (Hobart) in the final 6-3, 7-5. This is Lynch’s first title of 2013 although he has constantly been knocking on the door for his first triumph.

Finally in the 16 & Under events top seeded Nicholas Fader (Hobart) steamrolled through his fellow opponents facing his stiffest opposition against second seeded local Matthew Harris (Hobart). Playing at his local club Harris was unable to match the power and precision of Fader dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Fader then teamed with 14’s singles winner Lynch to form a formidable combination in the 14/16 combined doubles. The pair proved too strong for second seeded Jamie Baker Jensz and Henry Ostler (Hobart) winning 6-1, 6-1. With the win Fader and Lynch completed their remarkable double triumph for the event. In the combined 14/16 girls singles top seeded Catherine Krueger (Hobart) defeated third ranked Eliane Fader (Hobart) 6-1, 6-1. Krueger has recently come back from futures tournaments interstate and this experience showed in a clinical display of timing and aggression. Lastly in the doubles Krueger partnered fellow Hobart resident Hannah Coombe to defeat Eliane Fader and Charlotte Ingram 6-0, 6-1. With the win Krueger capped off a perfect tournament through not dropping a single set.

After a long two days of scintillating tennis action action heads to the North West with the 2013 Burnie Open AMT White next on the agenda. To enter this tournament online please click here.

A big thank you to Pam Field and Tony Blom for running the weekends play and without all those involved’s efforts this tournament couldn’t be so successful. Look forward to seeing you all shortly!
