After three weeks of phenomenal play in the inaugural Tasmanian Tennis League (TTL) pilot it was the South Tigers who reigned supreme with the final result determined by the final mixed doubles triumph.

On a picturesque warm morning at the Sunshine Tennis Club the undefeated Sharks were in the driver’s seat against the winless Devils. As usual play kicked off with singles action with some high quality, exciting tennis again on show. After a sluggish start Kathryn Easther got her Sharks off to a great start with a hard fought 8-5 victory over Phoebe Davis. The Devils responded well with Peter Leary completing a similar 8-5 victory over Rohan Kerr. In the line two positions it was an all Fader affair with Nick Fader (Sharks) storming back to defeat Matt Harris (Devils) and Eliane Fader (Devils) playing a near perfect match in her dispatch over Hannah Coombe (Sharks). In Doubles action things just got tighter with each team claiming a hard fought victory. This once again meant that the tie (and possibly champions) would be determined by the ever important mixed doubles. In the mixed of the day Leary/Davis (Sharks) played out a high quality win over Kerr/Easther 8-5. Completing the upset Harris/E. Fader defeated N. Fader/Coombe 8-6. With this upset win the door was left open for the 1-1 Tigers and Demons who were on hand cheering.

With the result hinging on the result of the final tie it came down to the Tigers against the Demons. Number one action kicked off proceedings with two lop-sided results. For the Tigers Catherine Krueger claimed a near perfect win over Johanna Jones whilst for the Demons Richard Wynwood stayed perfect in singles with a clinical display of power and precision in his victory over Shaun Thomas. These lop sided results continued in line two action with Brad Dunn (Tigers) dispatching Remy Lynch (Demons) and Sanyukta Singh (Demons) proving too strong for Jessica Fowler (Tigers). Doubles action was again split which meant the winners of the TTL pilot would be determined by the final mixed doubles action. In a see-sawing affair between Wynwood/Jones (Demons) and Kerr/Krueger (Tigers) it was the Demons duo claiming a hard fought 8-7 victory to pull the Tigers to the brink. In the final match of the pilot competition it was the Tigers duo of Dunn/Fowler claiming a comfortable 8-3 victory over Lynch/Singh to claim the title and along with it the spoils.

A big congratulations to the following South Tigers team;

  • Shaun Thomas (Captain)
  • Catherine Krueger
  • Brad Dunn
  • Jessica Fowler

After the final results were tallied the Tigers claimed the championship over the Devils on rubbers won. We couldn’t have predicted a more even and competitive TTL pilot and the feedback and interest gained from players involved was insightful.

In the battle for the games won percentage it was Catherine Krueger who stormed to the prize with a staggering +40 games advantage over the three week pilot. Remarkably Krueger won seven out of the possible nine matches on offer. Congratulations Catherine!

We would like to thank all players and parents involved for supporting and providing a great atmosphere not seen before in Tasmanian tennis. We are very excited about the next instalment of the TTL and look forward to seeing everybody soon.
