21 May 2014 | Tennis Tasmania

We would like to send a big congratulations to Jed Plunkett-Smith, Rebecca Flinn and Oscar Targett for being awarded the first ever Medibank Player of the Month awards for their stellar play and commitment to the successful Medibank Junior Development Series during February, March and April. For their efforts the trio have each won a Stringlab gift voucher which will assist them with their tennis future.

Our first player of the month (February) was ten year old Jed Plunkett-Smith from New Norfolk. Plunkett-Smith went a perfect 9-0 over the February/March period claiming the 11/u singles titles at the Burnie and Geilston Bay Medibank JDS events. Plunkett-Smith, who is as cool as a cucumber on the court has really risen to new heights in his first year of 11/u competition and will use these matches as much needed confidence ahead of his gruelling schedule.

Our second player of the month was split between two standout players with Rebecca Flinn and Oscar Targett (both from Hobart) being the recipients over the March/April period. Flinn has risen to new heights in 2014 after being very new to the game of tennis. Flinn started her tournament career in the 2013 Medibank series which provided her the ideal platform to grow and improve as a player. Remarkably, on-top of being awarded the April Medibank JDS player of the month honour, Flinn has also recently earned her way into the Bruce Cup State team which is set for Darwin in August. Flinn received this honour after finishing first in her 11/u age group at both the LTA French Open and St Therese MJDS tournaments.

Joining Flinn is 12 year old Oscar Targett. Targett was a stout 11-3 over the three tournaments, claiming a 13/u singles title at St Therese before falling at the semi final hurdle at the LTA French Open and Burnie. Targett is currently leading the way in the super competitive 13/u Tassie Showdown race at almost the halfway mark of this fantastic series of events sponsored by Medibank. Capping off this honour was Targett fighting his way through the Bruce Cup trials in Launceston last weekend. This will be his second Bruce Cup campaign after competing in Queensland at last year’s championships.

We would like to congratulate these award winners and thank all players and parents for your continued support of the Medibank Junior Development Series. The next event on the Medibank JDS calendar is the Rosny MJDS being held at the Rosny Park tennis club this Sunday 25th May. Entries close tomorrow so enter now to secure your place in what will be a great event!
