2 December 2014 | Tennis Tasmania

After a spectacular first week in the South East conference of the Asia Pacific Tennis League (ATL) our Tasmanian Devils are evenly poised at one win and one loss after the opening two rounds. As the carnival that is the ATL gains momentum we get set for our very own Tasmanian round this Sunday 7th December at the Launceston Regional Tennis Centre.

The curtain was raised on the 2014 season of the ATL with a bang at the Dingley Tennis Club with the home team entering the courts via a smoke screen and DJ pumping out music in front of a capacity crowd. With all six men’s teams in action our Tasmanian Devils battled hard, giving the Kooyong Classics all they could handle before succumbing in a highly competitive match. The team rued lost opportunities after dropping a number of three set matches with two of the matches decided by one point. Hobart born Jay Salter was the team’s lone victory in his dispatch of the Classics David Bidmeade.

In round two the ATL took to the Victorian country town of Yarrawonga to play on the pristine grass courts to close out country week. In a great battle between two supremely talented teams it was our Tasmanian Devils claiming a nail-biting win over the previously undefeated Tennis World Taipans. In a match spanned over four hours it was a straight set win from Melbourne standout Sam Thompson who proved the key with the matched deadlocked at three all. With the win the team moves within striking distance of the ladder leaders with three rounds to play.

As we move forward to this weekend’s two rounds the men take to the prestigious Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club on Friday evening to duke it out against the Dingley Dingoes. The Dingoes, led by current top 80 player and world’s fastest server Samuel Groth will be a formidable opponent for our Devils as they look to get above 500 with a win.

This Sunday we call on all Tasmanian sports fans to come out to Launceston with the super round featuring all six men’s teams in action. Come and see the best players to ever dawn on Launceston in a mouthwatering display of tennis action.
