27 September 2024 | Tennis Tasmania

The City v City Teams Championship was contested on Saturday the 21st of September. In what was a pre-event to the Tasmanian Tennis Awards evening, it didn’t disappoint. Burnie defeated Hobart 4-1, with Alicia Dale’s victory over Balin Russell being the only victory for the southerners. Launceston, with experienced duo Omar Fields and Jason Fletcher took care of business in a 5-0 victory over the home side Devonport.

In the 3rd place playoff, Hobart defeated Devonport, 4-1. Hometown hero Jake Gleeson winning the 2nd singles rubber over Harry Crowe in Devonport’s only win. In the championship match Omar Fields got Launceston off to a winning start over Balin Russell, however veteran Burnie player Elliot Johnstone used all of his experience defeating young Doug Sheppard. With things tied up, it was doubles expertise that made the difference. Things were tied after the first 2 doubles, however in the last doubles Jason Fletcher and John Marik were able to get over the line over Elliot and Alex Johnstone to give Launceston the championship.
