Host region Barwon have claimed honours as the overall winner of the 55th Inter-regional Championships held at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club from 7-9 January.
As the pinnacle event for top country players to represent their region and play in a team, the 2011 Inter-regional Championships were a great success with high quality tennis matches in all of the 30 events.
Loddon Campaspe triumphed in the Open Singles events, with Curt Garwood winning his second successive title defeating Just Robinson (Barwon), and Jessica Hartland defeating Vicki Stuckey (Central Gippsland).
Layla Simmie (Goulburn) had an outstanding tournament capturing the girls’ 12/u singles, doubles and mixed events. Winner of the boys’ 12/u singles and doubles event was Josh Charlton (Central Gippsland).
Oscar McDonald (Wimmera) and Bianca Duff (Barwon) were standout performers in the 14/u events, winning their respective singles and doubles.
Fairlie Lamond (South West) successfully defended her women’s 45 singles title and also won the women’s 45 doubles. Josie New (Goulburn) won the Open women’s doubles and mixed and Steve Packham (Central Highlands) performed well to win the men’s 45 singles defeating Tony Brushfield (Barwon) in the final.
Congratulations to East Gippsland for winning the 2011 Cooke shield for most improved region.
