More than 100 young tennis players stayed up all night on Saturday 18 December to take part in the Bendigo Tennis Marathon to raise money for charity.

Running from 6 pm on Saturday to 8 am Sunday, the marathon raised $4826.60 to support the Down Syndrome Family Support Group.

Having run for 10 years, the marathon has raised an amazing $53,143.23 for different charities, including the Children and Elderly Wards at the Bendigo Health Care Group, the Lighthouse Foundation, the Autism Family Support Group and local bushfire victims.

Marathon coordinator, and resident coach at Bendigo Bank Tennis Centre, Steve Storer, said it was a great opportunity for the young kids to do something to help their local community.

“It’s a great night for the kids. They play tennis between 6 pm and 8 am and bunk in the clubhouse. It’s a really good way for kids to help others,” said Storer.

“The Down Syndrome Family Support Group will put the funds raised towards a booklet for parents about what to expect once their child has been diagnosed with Down syndrome.”

The unique event demonstrates the Bendigo Tennis Association’s strong community links and sense of community involvement. Local businesses also threw their support behind the marathon event, including Bendigo Bank, DCK Real Estate, Prince Tennis Racquets, Retire Invest, KR Castlemaine, Pinky’s Pizza, Coca Cola, Gillies Pies/Pasties, Streets Ice-cream and the Bendigo Tennis Association.
